Are you preparing concrete for a coating, removing an existing surface, or trying to smooth rough areas? Shot blasting and grinding are two common surface-preparation methods, but each produces a different result.
The right method depends on how much material needs to be removed, the type of surface profile required, and what the finished floor should look like.
An enclosed shot blaster uses centrifugal force to propel small steel pellets, known as shot, against the concrete. The impact removes material from the surface and leaves behind a textured profile.
As the machine moves, usable shot is collected and recycled. Concrete dust and other debris are pulled into a connected dust collector.
Shot blasting is especially effective when preparing concrete for coatings, overlays, and toppings. The textured surface helps the new material bond to the concrete. Some coating manufacturers may also require shot blasting as part of their surface-preparation instructions.
Concrete grinders use rotating diamond tooling and machine pressure to remove material one layer at a time. Diamond tools are available in different bonds and grit levels depending on the condition of the concrete and the desired result.
Grinding can remove coatings, smooth rough areas, reduce high spots, and create a flatter, more uniform surface. By moving through progressively finer diamond grits, contractors can also hone or polish concrete to the desired finish.
A properly matched dust collector is important when dry grinding to help capture concrete dust at the source.
Choose shot blasting when you need to prepare a large, open floor for a coating or overlay and want to create a consistent, textured surface quickly.
Choose grinding when you need to smooth or flatten concrete, reduce high spots, remove certain coatings, work in tight areas, or create a polished finish.
In many cases, the best approach is to use both. A contractor may shot blast the main area of the floor and use a grinder around walls, drains, columns, doorways, and other areas the shot blaster cannot easily reach.
There is no single method that is right for every concrete-preparation project. Consider the condition of the floor, the amount of material that needs to be removed, the required surface profile, and the customer’s desired finish.
Choosing the right preparation method—and pairing the equipment with the right dust collector—will help create a cleaner, more consistent surface for the next coating or finishing step.
