What Can Cause an Air Scrubber to Lose Airflow?

[Air scrubbers](https://www.aramsco.com/catalogsearch/result/?q=air+scrubber) depend on steady airflow to pull contaminated air through their filters and return cleaner air to the work area. When airflow begins to drop, the unit may take longer to filter the space and may not perform as effectively on restoration, remediation, or construction jobs.

A noticeable loss of airflow does not always mean the equipment has failed. In many cases, the issue comes from the filters, the way the unit is positioned, or restrictions in the airflow path. Here are some of the most common causes to check.

### 1. Dirty or Clogged Filters

Loaded filters are one of the most common reasons an air scrubber loses airflow. As dust, debris, and airborne particles collect in the filter media, it becomes harder for air to pass through the machine.

Start by checking the pre-filter, since it is designed to capture larger particles before they reach the primary filter. If the pre-filter is heavily soiled, replacing it may help restore airflow and protect the more expensive HEPA filter behind it.

The primary filter should also be inspected according to the manufacturer’s recommendations. A filter may look usable from the outside while still creating too much resistance for the unit to operate efficiently.

### 2. Blocked Air Intake or Exhaust

An air scrubber needs enough open space around both the intake and exhaust. Plastic sheeting, walls, furniture, boxes, or other equipment placed too close to the unit can restrict airflow.

Make sure the machine is positioned where air can enter and exit freely. The exhaust should not be directed into a wall or another obstruction. When possible, place the unit where it can circulate air throughout the work area instead of repeatedly drawing from the same small section of the room.

### 3. Incorrectly Installed or Incompatible Filters

Filters that are installed backward, not fully seated, or not designed for the specific machine can affect performance. Gaps around the filter may allow air to bypass the media, while an overly restrictive filter can reduce the amount of air moving through the unit.

Before operating the air scrubber, confirm that every filter is installed in the correct order and direction. Check that the filter dimensions match the unit and that there are no damaged seals, bent frames, or gaps around the edges.

### 4. Restricted or Damaged Ducting

Ducting can be useful when exhausting air outside a containment area or creating negative pressure, but it also adds resistance to the system.

Long duct runs, sharp turns, crushed sections, and poorly connected ducting can all reduce airflow. Keep the duct run as short and straight as the job allows, and inspect it for collapsed areas or internal obstructions.

The size of the ducting also matters. Using ducting that is too small for the machine may limit airflow and place additional strain on the unit.

### 5. Heavy Dust or Debris Inside the Unit

Even when filters are replaced regularly, dust can collect around the intake, fan assembly, grilles, and other internal components. This buildup may interfere with airflow or reduce the fan’s efficiency.

Inspect the accessible areas of the unit between jobs and clean them according to the manufacturer’s instructions. Always disconnect the machine from power before opening panels or performing maintenance

### 6. Fan, Motor, or Electrical Problems

If the filters are clean and the airflow path is clear, the problem may be mechanical or electrical. A damaged fan blade, worn motor, loose connection, or speed-control issue can prevent the unit from reaching normal airflow.

Unusual noises, vibration, overheating, or inconsistent fan speed can indicate that the machine needs professional service. Continuing to operate a unit with a mechanical problem may lead to further damage.

### *How to Troubleshoot Low Airflow*

When an air scrubber is not moving as much air as expected, begin with the simplest checks:

- Inspect and replace dirty pre-filters.
- Check the primary filter for excessive loading or damage.
- Make sure the intake and exhaust are clear.
- Confirm that all filters are properly installed.
- Inspect ducting for bends, damage, or obstructions.
- Listen for unusual noises from the fan or motor.

It is also helpful to compare the unit’s current performance with its normal operating condition. A filter-change indicator, manometer, or other monitoring feature may help identify increasing resistance, depending on the equipment being used.

### *Keep Airflow Consistent*

Routine inspection and filter maintenance can help prevent unexpected airflow loss on the job. Check the air scrubber before each use, monitor its performance during operation, and replace filters based on job conditions and manufacturer guidance.

If airflow remains low after the filters, ducting, and setup have been checked, remove the unit from service and have it inspected by a qualified technician. Addressing airflow problems early can help protect the equipment and keep the job moving efficiently.
