
Floor-care equipment is built to handle demanding work, but regular use eventually causes parts to wear and performance to decline. Small issues can be easy to overlook, especially when a machine is still running, but continuing to operate equipment that needs attention can lead to poor cleaning results, unexpected downtime, or more expensive repairs.
Whether you use autoscrubbers, floor buffers, burnishers, or other commercial cleaning equipment, watch for these five signs that maintenance may be needed.
1. Cleaning Performance Has Dropped
One of the first signs of a maintenance issue is a noticeable decline in cleaning performance. The machine may need additional passes, leave behind visible soil, or produce inconsistent results across the floor.
Before assuming there is a major mechanical problem, inspect the parts that make direct contact with the surface. Worn brushes, pads, pad drivers, or squeegee blades can prevent equipment from performing as expected. The wrong pad or brush for the floor and application can also reduce effectiveness.
Check for:
- Worn, damaged, or uneven brushes and pads
- Debris wrapped around the brush or pad driver
- Incorrect pad pressure
- Reduced solution flow
- Clogged solution lines or filters
Replacing worn components and clearing buildup may restore performance. If the problem continues after basic maintenance, the machine may need a more thorough inspection.
2. You Hear Unusual Noises
Operators become familiar with how their equipment normally sounds. New grinding, squealing, rattling, knocking, or scraping noises should not be ignored, even if the machine appears to be operating normally.
Unusual sounds can come from loose hardware, worn bearings, damaged belts, debris buildup, or components that are no longer properly aligned. A small vibration or rattle can become a larger problem when the equipment continues to operate under a heavy workload.
Stop the machine and inspect any easily accessible areas for visible damage or loose components. Always disconnect the power source or follow the manufacturer’s shutdown procedures before examining moving parts.
If the source of the noise is not obvious, have the equipment inspected rather than continuing to use it until a failure occurs.
3. The Machine Is Leaving Water Behind
Autoscrubbers are designed to dispense cleaning solution, agitate the floor, and recover the liquid in a single pass. When the machine begins leaving streaks, trails, or puddles behind, there may be a problem with the recovery system.
Start by checking the squeegee assembly. Squeegee blades wear down over time and may become torn, warped, or coated with debris. Even a small piece of dirt caught under the blade can create a visible streak.
Other possible causes include:
- A clogged recovery hose
- A full or improperly sealed recovery tank
- Reduced vacuum performance
- A damaged squeegee assembly
- Incorrect squeegee height or angle
- Excessively fast operating speed
Water left on the floor can affect the finished appearance and create a potential slip hazard. Address recovery problems as soon as they appear instead of allowing them to become part of the machine’s normal operation.
4. Battery Runtime Is Getting Shorter
A battery-powered machine that once completed an entire shift may gradually begin requiring more frequent charging. Reduced runtime can be caused by aging batteries, poor charging practices, loose connections, corrosion, or an issue with the charging system.
Pay attention to whether the batteries are charging fully and whether the machine’s power drops more quickly under load. Depending on the battery type, maintenance may also include checking water levels, cleaning terminals, and inspecting cables for wear or damage.
Battery performance can also be affected by how the equipment is stored and charged. Follow the manufacturer’s recommendations for charging frequency, storage conditions, and battery care.
Do not wait until the machine stops in the middle of a job. A gradual decline in runtime is often an early warning that the batteries or charging system need attention.
5. The Machine Feels Different to Operate
Changes in steering, vibration, handling, or overall operation can indicate that something is beginning to wear. The machine may pull to one side, become harder to maneuver, vibrate more than usual, or feel less stable during operation.
These changes may be caused by worn wheels, loose components, an uneven brush or pad, damaged bearings, or problems with the drive system. On burnishers and buffers, increased vibration may also indicate an improperly installed pad, a damaged pad driver, or buildup underneath the machine.
Operators should report changes as soon as they notice them. Because they use the equipment regularly, they are often the first to recognize when a machine no longer feels or sounds the way it should.
Stay Ahead of Equipment Problems
Preventive maintenance is usually easier and less disruptive than dealing with an unexpected breakdown. Build routine inspections into your floor-care program and keep track of when brushes, pads, squeegee blades, batteries, filters, and other common wear items are replaced.
Cleaning the machine after use, checking fluid and recovery systems, inspecting cords and batteries, and following the manufacturer’s recommended service schedule can help extend equipment life and maintain consistent performance.
When a machine begins cleaning differently, sounding differently, or operating differently, take the change seriously. Catching a small issue early can help reduce downtime and keep your floor-care equipment ready for the next job.
